A Legacy of Faith, Worship, and Service

From its humble beginnings in October 1913 to its continuing ministry today, Bethlehem's journey reflects the dedication of generations of believers committed to serving God and strengthening their community.
A Century of Milestones
Our Journey Through Time
Our Humble Beginnings
Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church was organized in October 1913 under the leadership of Reverend A. L. Gardner and Reverend S. E. Watson. The early congregation established a foundation rooted in prayer, biblical teaching, Christian fellowship, and service to others. Through faith and determination, Bethlehem began a spiritual journey that would continue for generations.
Building a Foundation
As the congregation grew, Bethlehem entered a period of development under the leadership of Reverend L. L. Wardlow. In 1924, a church building was constructed, marking an important milestone in Bethlehem's history. This achievement represented the commitment and sacrifices of church members who believed in establishing a permanent place of worship for future generations.
A New Chapter
Under the leadership of Reverend F. D. Bookman, the congregation's present historic church building was erected at 4401 Baldwin Street in Dallas, Texas. The cornerstone of the building records its construction in 1944, preserving a physical reminder of the congregation's dedication and faith. The sanctuary became more than a place of Sunday worship — it served as a spiritual home where families gathered, children received Christian instruction, and generations celebrated life's milestones.
Faithful Leadership
Throughout its history, Bethlehem has been blessed by the leadership of pastors who helped guide its spiritual growth and strengthen its mission — Reverend A. L. Gardner, Reverend S. E. Watson, Reverend L. L. Wardlow, Reverend F. D. Bookman, and Reverend Harold W. Chism. Each generation of leadership contributed to the church's enduring foundation through worship, teaching, outreach, and service. Today, Bethlehem continues its ministry under the leadership of Pastor Jarod A. Cooper.
Celebrating 100 Years
In 2013, Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church celebrated its 100th anniversary. The City of Dallas formally recognized Bethlehem's centennial and its century of service to the Dallas community. The centennial celebration also marked a period of renovation and rededication, honoring the congregation's history while reaffirming its commitment to future generations. One hundred years of ministry represented countless prayers, baptisms, worship services, marriages, homegoing celebrations, and acts of Christian love.
111 Years & Still Standing
Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church remains committed to preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ, teaching the Word of God, strengthening families, and serving the community. As the church looks toward the future, its vision includes expanding community outreach, supporting families in need, developing opportunities for food assistance, and creating meaningful programs that uplift the surrounding community. The same faith that sustained Bethlehem's founders continues to guide the congregation today.
Historic Preservation
Preserving Our Historic Legacy
Bethlehem's historic sanctuary, erected in 1944, remains an important part of the church's identity and the surrounding South Dallas community. Today, the congregation is working toward preserving and restoring this historic structure, including its original architectural features.
The church's preservation vision includes restoring historic window openings, addressing structural and building-system needs, improving accessibility, and protecting the sanctuary for future generations. Bethlehem is also pursuing historic recognition and preservation opportunities to help safeguard its architectural and spiritual legacy.
"Our goal is not simply to preserve a building, but to protect a place where generations have worshiped, served, and found hope."
Celebrating the Past. Building the Future.
Today, more than a century after its founding, Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church continues to stand firmly upon Jesus Christ, our Foundation and Chief Cornerstone. We honor the vision of our founders, the sacrifices of those who came before us, and the faithful service of generations who helped build and sustain this ministry. As we preserve our historic sanctuary and prepare for new opportunities to serve, we remain committed to carrying Bethlehem's legacy into the future.
"We have come this far by faith."
To God be the glory for the great things He has done — and for the greater things yet to come.
